Such is the craze for allowing the amateur photographer to turn their images into semi-professional masterpieces via filters, all manner of services are now hitting the market.
This isn’t just confined to trendy image apps such as Instagram et al, but one destination has waded in with its own app which not only puts certain filters on images but turns any photograph into a landscape featuring the famed Northern Lights.
OnlyInLapland is the destination marketing group behind the idea of Laplication, an iPhone app released this week.
The app uses augmented reality, allowing users to their the phone upwards and screen will switch to the Northern Lights.
Other Lapland-esque filters are available, obviously, such as “Midnight Sun”, ice or autumn, as well as so-called Lappish objects such as reindeer antlers, snowflakes or a snowmobile.
Images are stored in the iPhone’s gallery and can be shared on Facebook, Twitter, etc.
Beyond the quirkiness of the app are some slightly more useful features, such as travel guides and information about the region.
Anyway, for those wanting to get a sense of the real thing, rather than a picture of Big Ben in London with a mock-up of the Northern Lights above it, here is a video clip that Visit Finland issued last year, deservedly attracting some 1.3 million views so far.
